The Lost Crusade: 2009 Mongolia Charity Rally

This is what we're driving:

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee - Category D Salvage

Here's what the ad said, "SADLY THE CAR STARTS  BUT CUTS OFF IN SECOND, THERE IS SOME ISSUE WITH FUEL SUPPLY. ALSO THE GEAR STICK IS OFF THE PULLEY...."

No Jigging Needed

Perfect! I'll take it!

Despite the fact that this baby doesn't even start and it's a tad luxurious for our tastes, it will make a fine chariot. It has an LPG conversion kit that will give us a range of over 500 miles. And since it is considered a hybrid vehicle, the Mongolian government will waive the import tax. That means the car will fetch a higher price at auction and make more money for our charity.

We're not worried about the starting issues. A very generous friend of ours and ace mechanic, Dave Howard, has offered to fix the problems and get her ready for the long, hard road ahead.

By the way....we have no idea what jigging even means.

You've Won!

Our Route

Our Route

We've settled on a route that takes us through 16 countries including Serbia, Turkey, Georgia, Russia and Kazakhstan. Of course things could change and we might end up driving blindly through Tajikistan, but at least this way we can give people the impression that we know where we're going.

Over the course of four weeks, we will drive 10,000 miles across five mountain ranges and two deserts. The intended route has been chosen to make this more than just a road rally. We will take advantage of areas along the way to climb and explore remote locations. After entering Russia from Georgia, we will take a side trip to climb Mt. Elbrus, considered Europe’s highest peak even though its in Russia. Go figure.
