My friend Jen Porter manages Turner Organic Farm on North Haven Island in Maine. Last weekend she gave me a tour of the place and the introduced me to the residents. Besides a medley of flowers and vegetables, there are pigs, goats, chickens, more chickens, turkeys and Belted Galloway cows. Although some of them are destined for the dinner table, they seemed pretty happy about life.
Jen has done an amazing job of getting the farm up and running. Not only does it set the standard for organic farms, but it’s also an amazing scene nestled into one of the most beautiful islands in Penebscott Bay. A newly finished barn complete with a creamery and crows nest lookout sits high on the hill overlooking greenhouses, gardens and beyond that, the sea.
North Haven is a truly fairy tale island. The residents there know how to slow down and enjoy life without all the distractions of the modern, on-the-go world just across the bay.
